Heyward Morris Fougerousse is a self-trained artist. In her pursuit of American Studies at Vanderbilt, she began creating abstract paintings which reflect her passion for humanity, the natural world and life experience. Heyward’s art evolves continuously as she draws upon her curiosity and appreciation of culture, history, perspective and dialogue. She created more space for art in her life in 2005 and began selling her artwork and taking commissions in 2015.
Heyward has shown her work in a solo art show at The Glenn Gallery at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in February 2020, as well as at Trinity Spotlight on Art, the ASID Art Gala at ADAC, and the 2017 and 2022 Lovett Art Show. Her work resides in a number of personal collections in Atlanta and throughout the US.
Heyward’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvas. She employs a technique of applying multiple layers using various modalities that include, for example, gouache and pastels, papers, pouring, scraping, uncovering. The result is a style and vision that is uniquely her own. Heyward is very grateful for the artistic influence and mentorship of Raul Miyar and Jennifer Ferris, both of whom have contributed meaningfully to her journey of creative expression.
Heyward was born and raised in Atlanta where she currently lives with her husband and two daughters. She graduated from The Lovett School prior to attending Vanderbilt University. Heyward co-chaired the Spring Arts Festival at The Lovett School in 2015, 2016 and 2017, changing the format impactfully for the students at Lovett and its inclusion of a diverse Atlanta art community. Heyward volunteered as an art teacher at The Boyce L. Ansley School in Downtown Atlanta once or twice a week from Fall of 2020 to Fall of 2023 (www.theansleyschool.org). Heyward has a passion for gardening with native plants, is a leader on the Board for The Park at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and you can find her gardening monthly in Atlanta's Fourth Ward.
